Optimising the full forestry value chain
In forestry, tree pruning plays a crucial role in maintaining tree health. By removing diseased, damaged, or dead branches, tree vitality can be improved and new growth encouraged while preserving the tree's structure and preventing excessive overgrowth. Beyond enhancing forest aesthetics, this practice is important for timber production. Proper management of tree growth helps maximize timber output, promotes healthier forests, improves accessibility, reduces fire risks, and supports more profitable harvests. Pruning is a costly, labour-intensive, and time-consuming silvicultural operation, so selecting appropriate equipment is critical to improving operational efficiency, ergonomics, and pruning quality. In Southern Africa, manual pruning saws have traditionally been the primary pruning tool, while pruning shears have largely been confined to wattle plantations. However, blunt or poorly maintained saws often produce rough cutting surfaces and large wounds that require longer periods to heal. In contrast, electric pruning shears are lightweight and capable of producing clean, smooth cuts that facilitate rapid wound occlusion and promote healthier tree development. Consequently, battery-powered shears such as the Pellenc C45, known for producing clean and precise cuts, offer a promising opportunity to modernise pruning operations within South Africa's forestry sector, enhancing productivity while improving the quality of pruning outcomes.

Pellenc C45
The adoption of modern pruning equipment has significantly enhanced the productivity of forestry operations. Whereas pruning previously relied on operators using hand saws and ladders, modern pruning tools enable a single operator to perform the same tasks more efficiently. This increased efficiency allows more trees to receive timely pruning, supporting improved forest health, more effective pest management, and the maintenance of productive plantations. Forestry equipment plays a crucial role in supporting sustainable forest management, particularly in maintenance pruning and plantation operations. As the forestry sector increasingly prioritizes environmentally responsible practices, the adoption of low-emission and electrically powered tools has become essential. Battery-powered equipment such as the Pellenc C45 contributes to this transition by reducing carbon emissions and complying with increasingly stringent environmental standards. In addition, the tool operates at significantly lower noise levels than conventional motorized alternatives, thereby minimizing disturbance to both workers and wildlife while promoting more sustainable and environmentally conscious forestry practices.
Noise exposure is a significant concern in forestry operations, as many motorized pruning tools generate continuous and often high noise levels throughout use. In contrast, the Pellenc C45 produces noise only during the cutting action, and even then, the sound level remains considerably lower than that of conventional motorized tools. Unlike motorised pole pruners, which emit noise continuously whenever the engine is running, the C45 remains quiet while the operator moves between trees or positions branches, resulting in a safer and more comfortable working environment
How does it work?
Pellenc C45 pruning shears are battery-powered pruning shears designed to deliver precise, clean cuts for professional landscaping applications. Widely used by green-space maintenance professionals, these advanced pruning shears combine power and ease of handling to improve the efficiency and safety of pruning trees and shrubs. Combining low weight with impressive power, they efficiently manage a wide range of trees, from delicate ornamentals to plantation forests. Their high-performance cutting head provides reliable cutting performance across a range of wood diameters and hardness levels. The shears are available in two cutting capacities: 35 mm (C35 model) and 45 mm (C45 model). Powered by interchangeable lithium-ion batteries, the Pellenc C45 offers flexible power options, extended operating times, and rapid recharging to support uninterrupted pruning activities. When paired with the ULiB 150, 150P, or 250 batteries, the shears have enough capacity for a full working day while maintaining consistent power output regardless of the remaining charge level. The C45 uses waterproof batteries, with maintenance required after every 400 hours of operation.
The C45 PELLENC Pruning Shears has a blade pin with an integrated grease nipple, 4 adjustment and operating modes, and an intuitive trigger. It is equipped with a very efficient gear motor (93%) that allows for controlled pruning even at low speeds. To improve accessibility and operator efficiency, the Pellenc C45 is compatible with the C45-P150 and C45-P200 extension poles, allowing precise pruning of trees up to 4 metres in height. The poles feature quick, tool-free assembly and are constructed from lightweight yet durable aluminium, weighing only 1.6 kg and 1.83 kg respectively. Their ergonomic oval design improves handling comfort, while the integrated branch-pulling hook helps operators position and remove branches with greater ease and precision.
The Pellenc C45 pruning shear features the built-in Activ'Security system, an advanced safety feature that immediately stops the blade if it contacts the operator's finger, even without PELLENC protective gloves. The system functions through a natural conductive circuit created when the user maintains contact with both the trigger and the lower body of the tool, enabling the blade to stop automatically should the other hand touch a metal component of the cutting head. For additional protection in wet or demanding working conditions, conductive PELLENC gloves are available in Lightweight Comfort and Waterproof & Breathable Comfort models. Beyond its safety features, the C45 offers a lightweight design of just 865 g and a balanced ergonomic grip that enhances manoeuvrability, control, and operator comfort during prolonged use.
Prospects of the Pellenc pruning shears C45 in Silviculture operations
The forestry sector is increasingly moving towards modernisation, with heavy, noisy, and energy-intensive equipment gradually being replaced by more efficient and sustainable technologies. The Pellenc C45 pruning shears represent an emerging solution that aligns well with current industry trends and operational requirements. These requirements include lightweight equipment, reduced labour intensity, enhanced safety features, lower carbon emissions, high productivity, and improved work quality. As forestry operations are often hazardous and costly, the adoption of advanced tools such as the Pellenc C45 offers significant potential benefits.
